Hemnet's Buyers' Barometer September 2026: More buyers expect price drops

4 September 2026

 | Non regulatory

The proportion of home buyers who expect falling housing prices increased in September. At the same time, the share expecting rising prices decreased, according to Hemnet's Buyers' Barometer for September.

Of the home buyers surveyed, 17 percent stated that they expect falling housing prices over the next six months. This is an increase of 3 percentage points compared to the August survey.

Meanwhile, the proportion of buyers expecting rising housing prices decreased slightly. In September, 33 percent stated that they expect rising prices, while half of those surveyed believe housing prices will remain unchanged.

Overall, this results in a net figure (the difference between the proportion expecting rising versus falling housing prices) of 16 percentage points.

Share of buyers who expect:
Rising prices: 33.3 percent (33.9% previous month)
Falling prices: 16.6 percent (13.5% previous month)
Unchanged prices: 50.1 percent (52.6% previous month)

Erik Holmberg, Market Analyst at Hemnet, comments: "The strong start to the autumn housing market is not reflected in home buyers' price expectations, which continue to weaken. A possible explanation is that expectations are affected by the increased probability of rate hikes ahead. If we were to see rate hikes in the near future, it could further dampen price expectations and also have a dampening effect on actual price development."

Hemnet's Buyers' Barometer was sent to 2,038 respondents between September 1 and September 3.
