Nine out of ten Swedes are happy with their neighbours

30 October 2025

Most Swedes have a good relationship with their neighbours – and consider that relationship important for feeling comfortable in their homes. This is shown in a new survey conducted by Hemnet ahead of Neighbour’s Day on October 31.

Neighbour’s Day was founded by Kenneth Eneroth in Köping in the year 2000 to celebrate all the wonderful neighbours in the region and is held every year on October 31.

Neighbours important for wellbeing
According to the survey, 86 percent of respondents say their neighbours are very or fairly important for feeling comfortable where they live. When it comes to overall satisfaction, the picture is consistently positive: 48 percent say they are very happy with their neighbours, 39 percent fairly happy, and only 7 percent fairly or very unhappy.

Few are disturbed by their neighbours
When Swedes are asked what, if anything, they find annoying about their neighbours, the most common response is that they are not disturbed by anything at all. After that, high noise levels are mentioned as the most frequent irritation.

Satisfaction highest among house owners
Satisfaction with neighbours is high both among those living in apartments and in houses – but somewhat higher among house owners. Among them, as many as 59 percent say they are very happy with their neighbours.

Hemnet’s market analyst Erik Holmberg comments:
"It’s clear that, in general, we’re very happy with our neighbours, and that they have a major impact on how comfortable we feel in the area where we live. That’s something worth keeping in mind when planning a move – it can be a good idea to spend some time getting to know the neighbourhood.
